"My education was the liberty I had to read indiscriminately and all the time, with my eyes hanging out" - Dylan Thomas

The Dylan Thomas Prize has been granted charitable status largely due to its extensive work with educational institutions, and our DylanED Programme was established to ensure the development of this aspect of the Prize.

We work with local authorities, the University of Wales, and our sponsors and broadcasters to ensure that young writers and students throughout Wales see the Dylan Thomas Prize as something of which they are a part.

Over the course of the Prize, the nominated writers visit universities, schools and colleges throughout the United Kingdom, with the aim of stimulating an appreciation of literature amongst young people and to encourage them to develop their own creative writing skills. The winner of the Prize is also awarded a Visiting Scholarship to give readings and workshops at the University of Texas at Austin.

Nam LeThe young shortlisted writers from Vietnam, Ethiopia, Australia, Wales and England thrilled their audiences in 2006 and 2008. This has given us a marvellous start to the DylanED programme, on which we are eager to build from 2010 and beyond.
